Creative Writing at The New School

The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs has awarded New School Creative Writing faculty member Dave Johnson's Free Verse journal a grant to expand its programing with the NYC Department of Probation into two more boroughs in New York City. Free Verse will now host poetry and performance workshops, open mics, acting classes, and special events throughout NYC.

Free Verse is a journal of poetry, prose and song that promotes turning waiting time into creative time. Headquartered in the heart of the waiting room of the new South Bronx NeOnwhere probation clients check in with their probation officers—Free Verse solicits new writing created while people wait.

Probation clients, friends, family, probation staff, probation officers, police, judges, community members, and professional writers all gather together weekly to read and write poems, perform on the open mic, and publish their original work in Free Verse magazine. Their work is published in English and Spanish and has been translated into Italian.
